Carpentry

Textilecraft is a crafting skill that allows player characters to process plant fibres into their own yarn which can be used as tying equipment and other things. Textilecraft is a long, multi-step process generally practiced by groups of people, but some materials are easier to process by single persons.

Textilecraft skill is improved by practicing it. Higher skill levels result in higher quality items, greater amount of processed resources and faster processing.

Plant materials

There are three plants that can be used for textilecraft: Nettle, hemp and flax. Each plant has its own characteristics such as availability, amount of fiber yielded, and ease of processing.

Processing

Fully processing fibres of a plant into complete yarn is a lengthy process, but unlike hideworking or preservation of food, there's little risk of spoilage, so the whole process can be completed in parts and mostly at the player's leisure.

Retting

Plants that are harvested whole (by means of agriculture skill) are retted to separate stalks of the plants in preparation for drying and extracting them.

Retting is done by soaking the plants in water during warm weather. Water temperature affects this step and it cannot be done during winter.

Drying

After retting is complete, the plant stalks must be dried for about a week. Dried stalks can be stored away for further processing at a chosen time.

Extract fibre

The plant fibres are finally extracted from stalks of plants by beating them against solid surface, similarly to the final laborious step of hideworking, preferably by using tools such as a club and working surface such as table or bench.

Fresh nettles can be extracted for their fibre immediately without retting process.

Spin yarn

The final step of textilecraft processing is spinning the fibres into yarn either by hand, which is very slow process, or by using a crafted spindle.
