Sages (or shamans in the north), live in some settlements of all cultures. They play a part in several quests involving the spirit world and the supernatural, sometimes teaching players about new spells or rituals. Also, the sage can aid in the healing of any injury when asked to. Sometimes they can be hired in exchange for equipment, accompanying you on your adventures. This allows you to use their services wherever you are.

Shamans have their own set of unique portraits which are not available to other NPCs, but remain available to the player during character creation.

URW Game Encyclopedia description

The official URW in-game encyclopedia (accessed by the F1 key) describes the sage ("tietäjä") thusly:

"Tietäjä" means literally "the one who knows the road", e.g. the sage, the sorcerer or the wise man.

A paragraph in another entry of the encyclopedia states:

Northern peoples have shamans as negotiators between the humans and the spiritworld. Among eastern and western peoples the equivalent of shaman is a tietäjä. But there are some differences in techniques used by shamans and tietäjät. A shaman masters a special drumming technique, and a tietäjä is familiar with techniques of verbal exctacy and rune singing. The social role of a shaman or a tietäjä is a very demanding one, for they are responsible for the welfare of the entire community. The position is often handed down from an old master to an apprentice, but there are also some self-thaught healers who become a shaman or a tietäjä when the local people regularly come to seek their servives.
