Salt

Salt is a rare and expensive resource in Unreal World. It can only be purchased from villages, usually coastal Driik villages. It is only used to create salted food; this is a form of food preservation. One pound of salt is enough to preserve 10 pounds of meat or fish.
Salt preservation has the advantage that it can be done at any time of year (unlike drying), and does not require supervision (like smoking).
