Wolves are a form of large game. They travel in packs of around 8. Around people, they are quite wary, but will attack if the player is too close. Tanning a wolf skin gives fur.
Beware if you manage to kill a wolf from a pack, be sure that the other wolves left entirely. Otherwise it is possible that one or more wolves come back to attack you while you skin their dead friend.
Like bears, wolves are capable of attacking an adjacent player from within a trap pit. Use caution when dispatching them. Wolves are also known to attack and kill livestock, including cows, even when they are protected by a trap fence.
URW Game Encyclopedia description
The official URW in-game encyclopedia (accessed by the F1 key) describes the wolf thusly:
The wolf is like a big, strong dog. Its length is typically over one meter and weight about 50 kg. Wolves live and hunt in packs, but a lone wolf can also be strong enough to kill an elk. Usually wolves eat elks, reindeers and hares. Wolves are very fast and sturdy runners. They avoid humans and it is not easy to see them.
