Shovels are useful tools. They are necessary in order to dig holes, which can be used in trap pits. A shovel is also necessary to perform agriculture of any sort.

Usage
You can dig a pit by pressing a and then selecting the shovel.
Availability
They cannot be crafted and must be traded for at a settlement.
However, you can make a wooden shovel which will work the same as the usual shovel, albeit using it will result in longer times.
Secondary uses
Shovels can also double as paddles or sestas for watercraft.

The shovel is used to dig trap-pits. (Used in passive hunting -- see TRAPS for more info.) It's also used to prepare the soil in order to plant/sow something with AGRICULTURE skill.
