Crafting skill

Survival is the skill for cutting branches and spruce twigs, building fire, making shelter, or making a hole in the ice.

If you are starting in winter, it is good to put some points into survival because otherwise it can take a long time to build a fire and you might get frostbite before you can light a fire. Otherwise it is not important to put points into survival because it increases very quickly and you will increase it to tolerable levels before winter just by lighting fires to cooking your food whenever you're hungry.
