Paddles are tools which allow players to move around on watercraft, either punts or rafts.

Usage

Paddles offer everything a sesta offers, and also allow for traversing deep waters. Paddles can move players in deep water, so they are superior to sestas.

Availability

They can be made or bought from a general store/fishing shop.

Crafting requirements

Potential issues with making a paddle

Starting on an island that has no settlement will make it impossible to obtain an axe if you did not start with one. You will not be able to make it to the part of Living in the Wild which gives you one, nor will you be able to barter for one.

Without an axe, you cannot make a paddle and without a paddle you will not be able to leave most islands. Stone axes cannot produce boards, and without a board you cannot produce a paddle. The best way to avoid this is by not starting on an island.

The above statement might need some updating, especially if it pertains to an issue in an earlier release. River and lake islands can be traversed via swimming, without watercraft. Islands in the sea might still pose this problem, though.

Related tools

If the player lacks a dedicated paddle for their watercraft, they can wield a shovel or wooden shovel as an improvised alternative for a purpose-built paddle. (Can someone confirm this? Wooden shovel doesn't work as a paddle for me.)

If the player doesn't need to steer their watercraft through deeper water, they can use either a sesta (purpose-made punt pole) or wield a ski stick in the same manner as a sesta.

URW Game Encyclopedia description

The official URW in-game encyclopedia (accessed by the F1 key) describes the paddle thusly:

The paddle is used to shove punt or raft ahead.
