Plenty of the delicious plants and mushrooms in the UnReal World are perfectly safe to eat snacks just waiting for a wandering adventurer to pick them up and eat them. Not all flora make for healthy snacks though, as some of them are quite poisonous. Fortunately for the culinary adventurer, poisons can often be removed through blanching, using a pot and some water with the "Boil / Herbal beverages" cookery option. Unfortunately some plants and mushrooms are just not meant to be snacks and remain poisonous even after blanching.

In addition to poisonous plants and mushrooms, poisoning can occur as a result of eating spoiled food. Spoiled food causes nausea, while all other types of poisoning (poisoning, deadly poisoning, and stomach-ache) are caused by poisonous plants and mushrooms. Hallucinations only occur as a result of consuming Noaidi's mushrooms.

Effects

The effects of poisons can be irritation in stomach and throat ("stomach-ache"), nausea, hallucinations (not listed on injury screen), illness ("poisoning"), or death ("deadly poisoning"). The ill effects wear off after a day or two, quite permanently in the case of death. Nausea may wear off within a few hours, or less if it is sufficiently mild.

All forms of poisoning (except hallucinations) increase the player's Injury rating, though the increase is usually minor unless the player either eats a large amount of something poisonous or eats something that is deadly poisonous. Another effect of certain types of poisoning is vomiting, which causes hunger and thirst to increase suddenly. Vomiting may occur frequently with stomach-ache and nausea, and occasionally with hallucinations. Stomach-ache can also cause sudden pain which causes the player to fall prone.

Regular poisoning (listed simply as "Poisoning" on the injury screen) has no additional side-effects besides increasing the injury rating. The same applies for deadly poisoning, except that deadly poisoning will continue to increase the injury rating, even if no other poisonous substances are consumed, until it either goes away (requires treatment; see below) or until the injury rating reaches 100%, resulting in death (this outcome is inevitable unless treated properly, including asking for healing from a sage).

Poisoning

Poisoning is the inevitable result of ingesting a poisonous plant or mushroom, or spoiled food. It cannot be treated by the physician skill. Instead, treatment needs to be asked from a sage or a shaman. Some herbal remedies may expedite the passing of poisons from ones body.

In the case of deadly poisoning, asking a sage for healing is the only chance of survival. In such a situation, it is advised to beg the sage for healing multiple times, and to be awake 8 a.m. when the game's morning check happens. Even then, the odds of survival are only 1 in 3. One may try to improve these odds by praying to one's deity of choice.

Actually, it's possible to have much better survival odds than 1 in 3 - in fact, survival is almost guaranteed if treated correctly. If you get deadly poisoning, find a sage or shaman as soon as possible, and ask him three times to heal you (if the icon for deadly poisoning in the injury menu has not turned green after this, then ask again). Then, gather herbs that say in the description that they remove toxins from the body (Black Currants work as well). Until you recover, eat ONLY herbs with this effect. DO NOT eat anything else, as doing so will fill your hunger bar with foods that will not help, leaving less room for herbs that will heal you. If you do all this, you are almost guaranteed to be cured within a couple days as long as you do not have any significant injuries (deadly poisoning may raise your injury rating above 50% before it goes away).
