Rapids can often be found in rivers. You can see them on the wilderness map as water tiles with some white dots in them. They do not freeze in Winter and therefore can be fished in the whole year.
When fishing in rapids, a player can expect a catch of small number of big fish, like salmon and trout, as opposed to fishing in calmer waters where the player often catches a number of smaller fish like roaches or breams. Catching something is also more infrequent in rapids than in calmer waters.
In the wilderness map, water tiles with white and black dots in them are a fords, where you can cross the river without a watercraft or swimming.
