Firewood is made by cutting up tree trunks or logs into blocks of wood and finally into firewood, preferably with a splitting axe. Each block of wood gives between 20 and 25 units of firewood. Splitting firewood uses the timbercraft skill.

1 tree trunk = 8 blocks of wood = between 160-200 firewood.

Three pieces of firewood are required to light a fire on an open tile. In contrast, four pieces are required when lighting a fire in a fireplace. Roughly 4 pieces of firewood are good for smoking 2 cords of cuts.

The player should be careful of starting fires outside of fireplaces as they can spread to adjacent tiles that have flammable materials on them. This can lead to forest fires, destroyed stockpiles, or even burning down the player's home. The plus side is that multiple fires can be exploited to quickly prepare tiles for farming.
