Discussion

  • The wiki needs a central location to discuss issues so people aren't bouncing all over the place. This page can be it.
  • Please remember to use ==section headers== for new topics of discussion.
  • When replying to a post, please also indent your messages by placing colon : in font of them to create pseudo-threading that is easier to read and follow.

Formatting

  • How do I redirect a photo to another photo? I had this issue when all the fish pages were trying to use their own image for their own fish even though all fish use the same graphic. It seems Phox fixed that, but I would like to know how he did it so I don't have to upload a separate image for something that uses the same graphic. --Coleslaw35 (talk) 05:17, 19 July 2016 (CEST)
  • @Coleslaw35: You just redirect them like any other page. Example on File:Trout.png:
#REDIRECT [[File:Fish.png]]
Documentation for redirects is found here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Redirects ~ Phox (talk) 23:44, 19 July 2016 (CEST)
  • Thanks! I appreciate the help. --Coleslaw35 (talk) 03:54, 23 July 2016 (CEST)

Wikia Dumps

XML dumps of Wikia wikis are available via Special:Statistics.

They're useful for importing content from old wiki to here, having offline copies or backups.

At time of posting full archive is 864 KB compressed and a whopping 18 MB unpacked; current is 363 KB and 2 MB.

Info on dumps can be found here:

"Autoconfirmed" accounts (active 4 days or more) on Wikia can generate new dumps as needed. ~ Phox (talk) 20:54, 4 August 2016 (CEST)

Displaying info depending on game version

So there is an issue with knowing which version of the game whatever info on the page came from, which I think should be discussed, which is why I added this section.

See for example the "prices" page where there is info from multiple versions displayed.

Right now I have started adding version info as hover text inf format:

<span title="HOVER TEXT" >NORMAL TEXT</span>

Which gives you the following

NORMAL TEXT

Which I suggest people do from now. Downside is you can't tell from a glance while playing the game. Perhaps consider adding a dedicated hover extension for this to enable more features.

An alternative is to look into how the Dwarf Fortress wiki solves the problem with a top side selection box for major revisions of the game that displays unique pages. Not sure if it will work with the way this game is updated, but its worth a look.

Alternatively, instead of creating new pages for every page where there is a change, perhaps it's better to make tabs for each version where the information differ for the relevant page sections or table. Then people can select whatever tab they want displayed. This tough, I believe require installation of an extension that supports tabs. Like Tabber or Tabs. Which only the system administrator can do.

Math extension?

Several pages would benefit from having a math extension.

For example the price page where information like value per lbs is a function of two other pieces of information, adding automatic calculation of price would make updating price info more convenient and ensure higher accuracy as there is no chance that people would forget to update the prices.
