Climbing is pretty useless. There is no reason at all why you should ever climb anything in the game. If you climb a tree, you will either fall out and break your neck, or you will succeed, but while you were climbing the animal you were looking for moved 3 wilderness map tiles away.

Climbing used to be used to spot animals on the wilderness map but that changed many versions ago. Now, just go to higher terrain (lichenous pine forest, hill, mountain, etc.) and look around you. Or go to a mire which is low terrain but if there is a lot of mire you can see for kilometres around.

Climbing is a physical skill used to scale cliffs, ascend or descend steep elevation changes, climb trees, and get over fences. It is useful for exploration, hunting, and escaping difficult terrain.

The skill can be accessed through the skills menu or directly using the shortcut Alt + L.

Usage

Climbing allows you to:

  • Climb up and down steep terrain, such as cliffs and ravines.
  • Climb trees to gain better visibility of the surrounding area.
  • Climb over fences when no gate is available.

Climbing automatically occurs when moving toward a climbable obstacle, such as a fence or a steep tile — if auto-climb is enabled.

Tree Climbing

  • In older versions (prior to 3.17), it was possible to climb trees on the wilderness map to extend your viewing distance, which was particularly useful for hunting and spotting animals.
  • While this feature has been removed, you can still climb trees in zoomed-in maps to look for animals or landmarks.
  • Use Ctrl + - or the mouse wheel to zoom out and improve your field of vision while in a tree.

Dangers

Climbing can be risky, especially under certain conditions:

  • Falls from trees or cliffs may result in injury, most commonly bruises or worse.
  • Rain and overloaded inventory increase the chance of slipping.
  • Wearing good clothing or armor can help reduce injury if you fall.
  • Climbing trees in cold weather without proper warmth may quickly reduce your body temperature, potentially causing frostbite.

Training

Climbing is relatively easy to train. A common method is:

  • Move repeatedly back and forth over a row of Trap Fences.
  • Enable automatic fence climbing in the game options for easier practice.
