Climbing used to be used to spot animals on the wilderness map but that changed many versions ago. Now, just go to higher terrain (lichenous pine forest, hill, mountain, etc.) and look around you. Or go to a mire which is low terrain but if there is a lot of mire you can see for kilometres around.

Crafting skill

Climbing is the skill used to scale cliffs, large changes in elevation and climb trees. It also allows the player to climb over fences. It can be accessed through the skills menu or with the shortcut Alt + l.

In previous versions it was possible to climb a tree in the wilderness map (rather than in the zoomed-in screen), but it is not available as of 3.17. (It allowed you to see farther distances and was great for hunting and spotting animals). However it is still useful to try to spot animals in your surrounding especially if you lost the trail. Make sure to use Ctrl + - or mouse wheel to zoom out to get a better visual.

Climbing can be dangerous, and can result in injury to the climber, usually in the form of bruises. To minimize the chance for injury, make sure you have some form of clothing or armor to protect yourself. Avoid climbing trees when overloaded or when it is raining, both of which greatly increase the risk of falls.

If you have low Warmth armor, climbing a tree at "Rather Warm" might well drop your body temperature to "Freezing cold" and cause frostbite injuries in winter.

Climbing can be trained quickly by traversing back and forth along a row of fences (make sure to turn on automatically climb fences).
