I am doing a winter starting challenge without any trading whatsoever.  One particular problem is to make a bowstring - it looks like all plants(?) die except some berries in winter. Is it even possible to acquire some yarn through textile skills, without resorting to trading? Some fibre producing wild plants that actually survive in the first few weeks of winter?

Vanilla game: no for a yarn. And yes for cord.*
Modding a simple recipe to unravel some cloth to yarn shouldn’t be too tricky...

* or you could make a bowstring using cord, which is possible in vanilla. Just select cord when making bowstring instead of yarn, and you’re golden.

Ah, so cloth cord works for a bowstring? Because I didn't have any clothes (part of the challenge). Well I guess I'll have to do without bows then.

I think a leather cord will work as well

Either cloth cords or leather cords should work in a pinch.

But during my last attempt to craft bowstrings from any kind of cords, the game claims that bowstrings crafted from cords are of lesser quality compared to ones crafted from yarns, CMIIW.

The game itself doesn't distinguish between cord-bowstrings and yarn-bowstrings, both are just bowstrings.

Yes, it is possible. Just raid the village instead of trading with them.
