I noticed that you can wield a rope. Is there any use for doing so, or is it just that the game sees it as a tool?

The game mechanism allows you to wield not only ropes, but also a lot of other items. But many of them just don't have special use. They are wieldable and that's all. Then you can throw them maybe? If that counts. Don't see the purpose for doing so though.

The game allows you to throw anything, and in most cases it causes some damage, but that doesn't mean it's effective. Similarly, you can hit things with anything you can wield, but, again, it's not particularly effective.

Ah, I see. I did know you could throw pretty much anything, but hadn't tried to wield anything other than weapons or a ski stick.
