Also, if none of your items are close for the trade value, they’ll suggest the lowest value item, even if it were twice the worth.

Seriously though... the idea of stable fixed prices is a more modern thing. Even into the early days of North American colonization one farmer might be asked to pay 4 eggs for something and someone else 8 eggs for the same thing. There are tales that the Quakers, who regularly meet together, discovered this and pushed for standard prices to be posted and adhered too.
