In the Development thread Sami posts that there are improvements made to dogs, snakes, etc. There is no new patch, so, are they being automatically updated on Steam? I have the game on Steam but I started a guy on the Free version first and am still playing that one.

Work in progress is not released on Steam (either) until it is finished as a new release. At that time I expect Steam to update the game unless there's a setting to explicitly block updates. Sami makes an effort to keep UrW backwards compatible, so unless he explicitly states that a version will break save compatibility, it shouldn't.

There should be no problem copying a save from the free download (+ optional donation) version to the commercial one, and probably not in the other direction either.
