I certainly experienced the same thing the other day when doing a medical herb quest (40 bear pipes is a large order, in particular with only one fistful of leaves per plant patch)

Same here.  It's been that way as long as I remember.

As long as the dev are looking at bear pipes I noticed that the total weight of the parts of a threshed plant are more than the wieght of the plant pre threshing but that might just be due the way the game rounds wieght

No, threshing is wonky, weight wise. One part of it is that some plants have a variable yield depending on skill and RNG, but it's convenient when harvesting broad beans that you don't have to haul heavy load back to the cellar all of the time...

Actually if the patch size (or leaf yield so to speak) would be 6 plants, you would get 2 fistfuls.
The yield is reduced because the young plants have smaller leaves so the same fistful yield would require more young plants than mature plants.
But the math used was all too harsh, and has been fixed/re-reasoned now.
From the fix on, bigger the patch the more young leaves you can expect get, already starting with patches of two.
However, young plants still yield less leaves compared mature plants so the harvest is still usually smaller than the patch size would indicate.

I like the logic of getting less from immature plants. The pedagogic problem is how to make the player aware of it so it's not reported (or just perceived) as a bug over and over again. The sage might possibly say something to that effect when giving the quest, or the quest might have a "could you give me some advice?" option so you would read it only the first few times.
Something along the lines of: "As I'm sure you know, mature plants can be picked and then threshed to provide the maximum yield, but both immature and mature plants can also be relieved of their leaves by simply picking the leaves, leaving a picked plant behind. As immature plants have smaller leaves than mature ones, you would need to pick more of those to get the same amount of leaves as you would get from mature plants."
Even better, of course, if the advice would be plant specific, such as where you'd find the plant requested, but that's also more work.

Yep, a message/info could be added but it's never a final solution as information is easily misplaced. Bug reports due to not reading are quite common :)
Lets think of ways to remedy it if this arises lots of reports in the future.
