Strange dog

Alright, I've been looking online and in this forum, but can't seem to find an answer to why a strange dog keeps showing up at my door?

I have two dogs myself (dog and big dog). Within the last couple of days in game, a female dog comes up to my house and just hangs around a bit. I have tried following it, to see if there is anything, but it just roams around. I haven't found any dead adventures, or alive ones for that matter.

Anyone have an idea what is happening?

Your conclusion is likely correct, the dog belongs to a traveler (etc) check on over view map to see if you see a 'person'

I've had similar contacts. I found that the traveler could be a great distance away. Eventually, the dog will find his way back to his master.

I have a very strong suspicion that sometimes when woodsman, or Njerpez dies, their dog just wanders around endlessly.

I saw a “wild dog” carrying an arrow. No owner visible anywhere. After several months the dog went in my big dead fall trap and ended up as mittens and bait.
