Guy decided that was a good place to hunt? Or he's casing your stash

Empty hands?Despite my best efforts, I've never managed to make an effective unarmed warrior. If you (or anyone else out there) have managed to uncover some secret way to consistently beat robbers or Njerp warriors without any weapons please share.
Crossbow - Crap (One shot wonder)Uhh...no. Crossbows perform consistently better than bows at hunting; except for at very high bow skill %s and some edge cases. They have a combination of high damage and high accuracy at long range in exchange for a low rate of fire. For hunting, where you can only sneak up close enough to hit your prey at long range and you only have time for one or maybe two ranged attacks accuracy and damage are most the important traits. Crossbows perform well even at low skill levels - like 20-40%. Typically only a single successful shot is enough to slow a target down enough to make it simple to chase down on foot. They can hit at noticeably longer ranges than javelins.
A running target is harder to hit than one that is stationary or moving slowly, and I believe that applies to ranged attacks, and it's obviously a lot easier to achieve that while the target is (mostly) unaware of you.I believe the accuracy penalty against running targets ONLY applies to ranged attacks. One other benefit of stealth though is that the target is less likely to notice or be spooked by a missed shot.
Stealth makes a massive difference to your first shot. URW compares the success level of you shot versus the success level of the targets dodge, almost always reducing the damage by a considerable amount. If the target can't see you, there is no dodge. Always try to hide before taking a shot, if you can. You can unhide to chase.Hmm. You know, while I will readily admit that it's been....years...I was rather under the impression that dodge did not apply to ranged attacks. (Which is one of the things that makes thrown weapons so effective in Njerpez/Robber fights). Something that could be readily tested I would imagine, if the damage difference is, as you say, considerable.
How big is that lake? These days, I tend to plant my seeds along the border of a lake/river because it's less work to clear the area, but I only plant in every other row because I want there to be some spaces for bear pipes to grow.Lake is maybe about 30 tiles. Having an easy cabin is nice and all, but I'm worried about getting as much farmland planted as possible atm. As well as having time to make trade goods for necessities. Thinking maybe I should have gone for a hill or maybe grove instead. Usually easy enough to plant near a bordering forest so you have plenty of lumber; not to mention that there's often enough trees around anyway.
Another thing I like to do if I'm making a big farm and want to plant a whole tile, I pick a tile that is already mostly open (like a lichenous pine forest). You can only plant about a third of it before you hit the tile item limit so I make crop circles or rather big triangular designs. But it's not stupid to start in a woodland like you did, you'll have plenty of logs for a big cabin when you're done.
