You might catch 2-legged prey with that, but don’t be surprised if all their metal weapons/tools sink and be gone forever.

Yep, didn't think of that.
Then I should bait bear/pit traps with arrows.

I forgot about this thread and I haven't tried to use this kind of trap.
I do have a habit of dropping tree trunks on non-rapid water tiles so that I can just drop a branch on the pile to break the ice, so I might drop bait in these piles on a whim and if I remember to do it.
Would I catch drowned 2-legged predators on these traps if I baited them with an arrow?

I've also "caught" drowned villagers in villages' wells/water_sources that were piled with tree trunks during "safe to walk ice" months.

Tanning is now pausable task allowing you to have breaks and continue at will later on.
Will you be forced to rest once your penalty reaches 100%?

which can break over time or upon damage

By over time do you mean an axe/spear being unused and the passage of time breaks down the connection to their axe_head/spear_tip?
Or do you mean them being worn away and eventually breaking after repeatedly using them for crafting/activity over time?
Or is it both?
Or is it something else?

AFAIK the only way to damage weapons is to use them to block attacks. Are there other ways they can be damaged?

Some scenarios (from most likely to least likely):
A spear losing its head while it is used to spear fish in shallow/deep water and while you are standing on land or on shallow water.
A spear/axe losing its head just as you finished making a hole in ice.
An axe losing its head while it is used to fell a tree while standing over shallow water.
Using a spear/axe to attack an entity that is standing on shallow water or swimming in deep water.
Throwing a spear/axe to attack an entity that is on shallow or deep water.

Is it possible to lose an axe_head/spear_tip during the above scenarios?

Guides and tutorials / "Safe to walk on ice" trap.

I visited one of my trap locations and I found this peculiar catch.
Note how there's a land tile to the left of the reindeer but it still didn't manage to climb out.
IIRC I've seen elk that managed to break the ice on an iced tile, climb on a solid ice tile, and repeat for about 5-10 tiles before drowning.

The trap pits below were baited with a raw meat cut and a turnip and/or a fistful of broad beans, which I'm pretty sure is what attracted the reindeer and the elk that I found in one of the trap pits.
In the future I'll drop a raw meat cut and a turnip on a similar ice tile with tree trunks on it and see if this trap will attract animals. I'll make sure that there isn't any other bait nearby.

Unless you are unable to make trap pits, I think making this kind of trap is not worth the effort. On the other hand if you have made your settlement adjacent to a water tile that is not rapids, making this trap to catch any invading Njerpez might be worth it.

Suggestions / Re: Hire a villager to smoke meat or fish for you.

Cutting firewood is another activity I don't do. I just wear a full set of bear fur clothing and wool socks and gloves as needed. I do collect branches when I'm waiting on something that will need my attention in less than a few hours.
The only time I would consider smoking food is if I was so seriously injured that traveling and any complex/arduous task is not worth doing.

Since the new smoking mechanics were introduced, I haven't bothered with smoking meat and I just roast and sell them. I find it more enjoyable to spend my time hunting instead of restricting and spending my time within a day's travel to where I would have smoked my meat.

I would like to see the option of hiring villagers to smoke meat/fish.
The player provides the raw meat/fish and sufficient cordage. For every ## of meat/fish smoked, the villager keeps 1 piece of smoked meat/fish.

+1

Assuming that the target is a: adult person, stag/elk, reindeer, bear (maybe)

Shooting at a target far away:
The only friendly beings standing in front of you that have any chance of getting hit are an adult person or reindeer.

Shooting past a friendly animal that is adjacent to both you and your target:
Likely to friendly fire: adult person/reindeer/cattle.
Moderate chance to friendly fire: dogs (imagine a dog jumping/climbing to reach for the target’s neck).
Unlikely to friendly fire: Sheep, pigs, small reindeer, and small cattle.

Make sure to sell off any clothing that you don't absolutely need, especially Fine/Masterwork quality ones since AFAIK their only benefit is a higher bartering value.

Suggestions / Village items spawn in a single building/location.
« on: September 18, 2021, 02:40:58 AM »
I wish items would spawn on a single tile inside a village building.
In every village, I gather all items and drop them in the biggest building. I don't find this habit fun, but it makes trading and keeping track of what a village has a lot easier for me.
I took a quick look at the wiki's modding page, and it doesn't seem like something that can be modded in the game.
I got the sense that Sami would be against this, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Suggestions / Re: Stack yarn of the same length 3.70 beta.
« on: September 17, 2021, 05:29:51 PM »
All the yarns I have were purchased from villages.

I've never manually cut a yarn and have always relied on the automatic cutting to required length whenever I dry food or make blunt arrows.

When I do dry food that requires less than 25 feet of yarn and I don't have the exact length of yarn required, I'll try to use available yarns that total the length of cordage required.
For example: I need to dry 48 pieces of meat. I'll use the available 20 foot yarn of any material, plus a 4 foot yarn of any material.

I figured that the same length of yarn would stack just like the 150 foot ones your purchase from villages. Unfortunately it seems that the 25 foot yarn do not stack because they have different weights.
Please make the same length and material yarn stack together.

Your hungry dogs will happily eat the whole body until there's nothing left, as long as you don't touch the body.

Would you take a worn bicycle and a used lawn mower in exchange for the brand new bicycle you received as a gift (or won in a lottery)

If a lawnmower or whatever additional item/s I received in the trade were more useful to me than the brand new bicycle collecting dust in storage, I sure would make the trade.

when you have a bike you're comfortable with and have customized to your liking (and thus don't have a use for the new one) and live in an apartment?
As I said earlier, "If a person had a use for the knife it wouldn't even show up on the trading window." This means that the individual you are trading in the wilderness or all the people in a village or lone dwelling already have enough knives of whatever quality they are happy with.
The additional items, along with the lesser quality item, are something that the person with the higher quality item has a use for. The person could keep the higher quality item collecting dust, or they could have a lower quality item collecting dust with the addition of other useful items that were included in the trade.
Also, the lower quality item is more likely to sell since more people can afford it.
