Re: Summery summary in the midst of upcoming version hype
Can we get a metal working skill and start integrating smithing into the vanilla game? It is Iron age Finland after all. August 29, 2019, 06:01:30 PM |

Re: Tree felling task progress bar gets reset
This was interesting. NPC who has butchering carcass a nearby mistakenly affected the character's time calculations. Fixed now. Fixed - persists in 3.60beta - hotfix 3. October 12, 2019, 09:02:04 PM |

Lots of angling improvements on their way
Fishing with a fishing rod is going to have if not a complete overhaul, a lots of improvements at least. I've been tweaking the angling code for a good while already, and the work just seems to continue and continue, but when it's all done we're going to have something like this featured: - fishing rods will be craftable by player character, with slender trunks, cordage and hook. - wooden and bone hooks will be craftable by player character. (If I get really carried away there might be some special hook types for special occasions.) - baiting will be featured. Worm digging is under consideration but we can also start with scraps of food and using small fish to catch bigger fish. - wear and tear of fishing rod parts will be featured eg. hooks snapping off eventually, when they've been nibbled enough. (Gotta add possibility to add new hooks as well.) These are future additions. Not yet functional in current version 3.63. November 17, 2020, 05:40:14 PM |

Re: Lots of angling improvements on their way
Looking forward to this, and the accompany BAC update to match it. Making more vanilla items accessible in vanilla is generally a good thing. Speaking of which... *nudges with an iron anvil* November 19, 2020, 04:39:45 PM |

[3.63] EXPLOIT: anything inside birch-bark containers can be used in tanning
I was about to tan a soaked elk skin with newly obtained bark. But I mistakenly chose birch-bark box of 'coarse grains' instead and, to my surprise, worked as tanning material. I had to fill the now-empty box and try it again to make sure. By not starting tanning but pressing escape during the pause when all conditions are met. Consequently, the birch-bark box, which was emptied when selected for tanning, did not refill when canceling. I repeat: I did not start the process. Rye flour (made into sour mixture) can be used for tanning IRL, so initially I thought there was some purpose to all this. But then, another thing was that I had a bag full of these same grains. That bag of coarse grains could not be selected for tanning. So now I suspect it was the "birch-bark box of ..." that allowed the grains to be chosen in the first place. I have to test this with putting, say, dried meat inside a birch-bark container and try tanning with that. I shouldn't even be reporting this, because now I want to use rye flour in this fashion in the future... EDIT: Confirmed. I just tanned a bear skin with 2.1 lbs of awful dried elk cut from a birch-bark basket. Pretty sour stuff EDIT: And I see birch-bark strip works too, even though the proper (reddish brown, used in tanning) bark was left on the birch... The white papery stuff shouldn't tan anything. This is a language problem, actually. Since in Finnish (for example) the outer bark (white stuff) is called tuohi and the inner bark (brown stuff) is called parkki. November 26, 2020, 04:14:50 PM |

'Asentokuusi' - simple shelter under a leaning spruce tree
A few essential wilderness accommodation options for rough wanderers are coming up. 'Asentokuusi' (can be freely translated as "post spruce") was the simplest form of shelter for resting and spending a night protected from the elements - and in the next patch we'll be featuring a possibility to set up a 'post spruce'. Post spruce is made simply by felling a young spruce to lean against another spruce tree. Some of the lowest twigs are removed to create space, and these are then laid on the ground for some insulation and cushion. Simple as that. This was the usual method of spending a night in the wilderness condition when more permanent camp wasn't necessary. Setting up a post spruce will found in "Building options", and it does felling the tree and covering the ground with twigs all together. Tools needed for the process are the same as for felling young trees in general. With this addition we'll also feature general usage of spruce twigs as ground cover for insulation. If there are no furs to cover yourself into sleeping on spruce twigs, instead of bare ground, now keeps you a bit more warm during cold nights. These are future additions, not yet functional in current version 3.63. March 12, 2021, 06:39:15 PM |

Version 3.70 beta now available on Steam, and for Lifetimers
Version 3.70 beta is available on Steam as beta-branch you can opt-into at will. Lifetime members can find the beta version at the designated forum section. On Steam there's now also Summer Sale going on. Beta release on Itch will follow next week. Things are fairly stable already, but as it's beta release the bug potential is higher than usual. Also, some features are still pending to be polished to their final stage in patches to follow. The key features of version 3.70 version deal with the moon and the moonlight, fibre processing with new textilecraft skill, snow penalty for all the creatures and snow crust, new character portraits, tying equipment adjustments, craftable fishing rods and usage of baits, option for metric units, and so on. The list of additions and fixes is long. You can take a look at it here. Phew! It's been quite a bit of content to add. Let's keep our fingers crossed for the possible beta bugs being minor and scarce. But whatever their size and annoyance level may be, we've got our bows prepared for shooting them down. Season's Greetings
The midwinter and holiday season is at hand! It is time to send you our warmest Season's Greetings with a few moody photos from this very day. Thank you for 2021 to those who already roam the UnReal World, and welcome into the Far North, all you new adventurers. We have just passed the Winter Solstice on northern hemisphere, and the amount of daylight now slowly starts increasing. Otherwise the winter in Eastern Finland continues in decent -20 degrees celsius temperatures with delightful amount of snow. Sami (UnReal World creator) heads towards the real world in horizon. Merry Christmas, Tree. This mighty spruce grows beside the village road, not very far from the development chambers. Now let's survive the midwinter, and see you again in 2022! The 30th jubileum, 47th birthday, and sort of a year off
This year, in 2022, we are celebrating the 30th Jubileum of UnReal World. The game was first released in the summer of 1992, so the 30-year milestone will be reached this summer. Now what will this special year of celebration bring upon us, and the game? When it comes to coding and development, I will be taking it real easy. It is likely that we'll see some updates to the game, but mostly I'll be devoting my time for variety of other things. So I'll kind of celebrate the 30 years of development by taking a year off from the usual coding flurry. This also allows me to better contemplate on the future of the game as there some challenging overhauls in our sight. One is moving to higher resolution and modern aspect ratio. The year is early, and these thoughts are scattered, so more news on this front will follow later on. But yes, it is truly so that I will take a year off from the usual, practical, hands-on development. Planning, brainstorming and a little something easy paced remains, though. Nevertheless, during this year of celebration we will be bringing you some recreational content from the North, out and away from the development chambers. What it will be exactly remains to be seen, but I'm sure this year off will bring along many occasions, incidents, experiments or artistic projects to share or publish. There are some ideas bubbling under already. On this thursday, 27th of January, it will be my 47th birthday. I started working on UnReal World at the age of 15 and two years later, at the age of 17, the first version was released to the public. Now the 30th Jubileum, or 47th birthday, may feel like an occasion to offer me a drink or something, and for that purpose I quickly created "buy me a coffee" page. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/SamiMaaranen It's a simple support channel I've been asked to allow even earlier. Now it's up and will remain so at least for this year. I'll reserve the right to decide the drink to buy with your support , but big cheers anyway! (And surely the regular donations page also works for gifting some squirrel hides.) So these are the news to start this year with. Feel free to comment or ask if something comes to your mind. Yours, Sami (UnReal World creator) The developer is currently out the office ... He's skiing in the woods following two elks... He will be back occasionally and eventually. Be ready
To all my dear friends in Finland - be ready. Rabid orc is on the loose and you guys are not part of NATO. Threats are being made again and I am sure some of you are taking them seriously, but please be ready. Yes, we are bleeding rabid orc. Yes, Ukraine WILL stand, but there are quite a lot of them and they have been amassing weapons for last 30+ years. I know that its rather low possibility that the hordes will attack you at this moment, but its not impossible. Be ready. To all youngsters who might think its just a "thing" and will pass, let me leave you with this wonderful song. Have a listen and make your own conclusions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nmb0SeKFrHg -- Слава Україні! Смерть ворогам! April 24, 2022, 07:23:41 PM |
