Re: Suggested forum modifications
Quote When you sign up for the forum, you don't have to validate your email address to prove that you are the owner of your email address. I found a setting for that, and changed it to require e-mail verification. I hope someone who registers after this change can confirm this works now. EDIT: Quote Marquees are annoying (anything that moves is annoying) and should be removed. Found that, too. It is now disabled, along with 'flash'. EDIT2: Quote Spoiler boxesHmmm, so let's see! Spoiler: show EDIT3: Quote As Sami noted elsewhere, the like feature doesn't work yet. ... aaand that seems to be fixed, too. Feel free to test around, everybody! April 23, 2017, 04:21:05 PM |

Re: Keeping the game fresh
Nothing too special normally. Generally though I will play a theme. I enjoy seal-tribe living a semi-nomadic life hunting seals. Sometimes I edit the plant files so that every single herb and plant produces seeds (this is moderately time consuming but not hard) and then make myself a massive farm where I grow every herb and just experiment with various cooking and medicine components. I remember a while back I kept trying to see if I could eat those poisonous black mushrooms and survive with my special medical herbs. May 08, 2017, 03:46:16 AM |

Re: Hey Sami, everyone- UnReal World got noticed by Guru Larry!
Quote Time to call Guinness and challenge for their next publication. Actually, I think the Guinness World Record team got it correct, and it is Larry who, after all, is a bit confused with facts Following Larry's logic, UnReal World development time was about 18 monts - Sami started developing some time at 1990, and the first playable version was released around may 1992. The first version was released as share-ware, and according to the standards of those times, it counts as 'a public release'. Since 1992 UnReal World has been receiving a continuous stream of updates - which is different from the 'development hell' Larry describes with those other games. Also, thas is why UnReal World can't hold a Guinnes World Record for longest development time. Instead, UnReal World has the official Guinnes World Record for longest update support. So, no need to call Guinness to challenge their nominations. May 22, 2017, 11:10:52 PM |

Re: My first bear.
Ahh one's first bear. Your character seems to be out in the frosty snow. A trusted companion Reindeer with you. The vast wilds. What was everyone else's most memorable bear? Well mine comes from the tale of Beodrin. His story began with the tragic death of his father on a hunting trip. The random generated creature.... a bear!! It gets better. We were on an island! The man killing bear, dead dad and me. At his point in my gaming and modding I thought you could only use leather to make rope. Rope to make a raft. To get off the island. To escape the man killer bear. Now where could I get leather? Oh oh. There is only one source. The bear that killed my dad! For weeks I lived on the southern part of the island. The bear ruled the north. On one daring dash I recovered dad's gear. I learned to sleep surrounded by traps. Fences, too, later learning man and bear alike could easily kick them down. When a night's sleep was interrupted with "you think you hear something nearby" oh spirits was I worried! There was only so many berry bushes on the island. Both me and the bear were eating them. Finally I had enough leather from small game to make one, not three, ropes. So I made a the three tree trunk bear killer. Coming back later indeed the bear had gotten into the trap. Alive. Angry. Roaring. I tossed my three javelins for minor wounds. I tossed rocks and stones. I tossed many things. Where I could I went close to toss them again. Again and again I tossed things at the father killer. All the while the risk of it escaping the trap growing. Perhaps my father's spirit was there. Holding the trap down on the bear. After an arc of the sun the bear fell unconscious from dozens of minor wounds and blood loss. Most of bleeding wounds had even stopped bleeding. Cautiously creeping forward the death stabs to the neck were made. The bear died soon. I had, I thought, to turn the bear into leather. So Beodrin lived a few weeks more on Bear Island to dehair the hide. Finally the raft was made and he sailed onto greater adventures. Before his death becoming known as Beodrin Two Bears, who killed two bears and wore them both. Yes he wore his father's killer. As leather armor. Ah, but those are stories for another day. Re: Quality of Life (for the Player) Improvements
1. Changing this would IMHO be much too unrealistic. 2. I like this suggestion. 3. You can already do this by canceling the eating before finished. I call it "tasting" the food. May 27, 2017, 06:34:13 AM |

What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
I'm bringing a classic back because I almost burn myself to death today. I was burning a field for herbs and walked near the fires while carrying the stakes to make the fence, the stakes caught fire under me... I was too fatigued to move and I panicked IRL for a few seconds until I tried to zoom out. That worked and saved my character. Now my arm is useless and I can't prepare the soil I was burning or complete the fence... May 29, 2017, 04:13:36 AM |

Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
My current character has set out on a pilgrimage of sorts, with the goal to visit all cultures and do quests for each (travelling light - not a shopping run). I try to avoid settling down as that usually takes away much of the excitement for me, but I will take note of interesting places and perhaps come back to settle down. I set some limitations to keep myself from getting rich too soon and role playing reasons: No stealing or borrowing and must pay for staying in villages overnight No selling raw or simply cooked meat (must be dried or smoked) No smoking meat in villages (gotta find a cave or build my own house) No wasteful hunting just for the furs knowing tons of meat get spoiled solely for monetary gain Bunch of role playing stuff such as keeping the room heated when smoking meat, finishing animals off quickly etc Will be updated as I go. Started in spring and currently using the last few weeks of winter to dry some meat to munch on and trade with. Got unlucky with the 'Not all who wander are lost' scenario (I mean on top of the bad fortune of living through that scenario) as all of my father's equipment had burned. Next short term goal will be getting an axe and may have to get by with a stone axe for a while because the area I started in (deliberately) seems rather poor. May 31, 2017, 01:56:26 PM |

Summery summary 2017
So, the new forums are up and running, some content popping up here and there - and all seems to be quite well at this new discussions settlement of ours. Nice! Thought of posting a little summary about some upcoming new features, and when to expect them. This is something that's been probably originally posted at the old forums, but we'll hereby bring the completely new forum members on track as well. So summer it is, and we've been steadily trucking towards yet another version. Once it's wrapped up it's gonna be summer holidays for me, and new features in UnReal World for you. Summer it is, despite of the current weather in Finland including little snow and sleet every now and then, chilly days and almost frosty nights. But the weather engine still isn't bugged I'm hopeful that maybe in July we could have a new release out. Like always, we're adding new features on many different fronts but let's highlight some of the probably most widely interesting here: * Bones and antlers Antlers and bones can be now harvested from carcassess. They have only little usage on their own but do serve as trophies and new raw materials to be utilized via modding if you like. * Skulls and teeth Skulls can be now harvested from a few species of dead animals whose skulls (or teeth) have meaningful ritual or magical usage. Skulls can be furthermore applied to pick teeth from them. Bear teeth for example are well-known for their magical powers. Screenshot: By the sacred bear memorial rite tree Panu takes a look at the sturdy bones after hanging the bear skull in place. * New spells, more spells, spells screen overhaul We're giving up the old ritual system for good, and now focusing on the new kind of spells and spells system first showcased in version 3.40. This means removal of some of the old spells, but also featuring more and more new spells. Ritual screen will be known as "Spells and magic means" screen and all the new spells are listed there as well. "New spells" refers to spells featured in version 3.40, which are learned within quests and performed by following the instructions given in spell description by using the common game mechanics and actions. Currently you can view new spell descriptions only in the quest journal, but now it all will be available within the spells screen. Whenever a new spell is learned it will also appear in this new list of spells. Bringing the selector on a any spell in the list displays its information dialog. If necessary, a selection is then made by mouse click or enter. In addition, there are also hotkeys for quick spell selection. In case of the new manually and mechanically performed spells the spell selection merely shows the spell description and instructions to follow in order to perform the spell. The old spells (eg. blood-stanching incantation) are colored differently and automatically put to action upon selection. Screenshot: The new spells screen with quite a bit of spells known. Hovering the selector over the first spell shows the description. * Cubs and calves - rise of the young animals Cubs and calves have been added for relevant wild animal species eg. elks, bears, reindeer, hares etc. In case of large species ie. elks and bears, the young ones usually follow their mothers in the wild for a full year after the birth. So, now you may occasionally encounter an elk mother wandering together with her calf, or a bear mother followed by her cub. Mother animals may act more unexpectedly or aggressively than usual when they're still taking care of their young ones -- and that's especially true in case of bears. Few screenshots - the adventures of fghfg among cubs and calves Bear mother with its cub. Careful now. You don't want to position yourself in between those two. Ooo.. isn't that sweet... not a hunting day today. * Ant nests For some this is a mere curiosity, for some an absolute necessity. Anyhow, ant nests can be now found in the forest. They are needed in performing certain spells but have no other use to the player character currently. Screenshot: It's raining - and it's ant nest! And finally, something to highlight about upcoming Steam goodies... UnReal World Steam Trading Cards Trading Cards for UnReal World are coming this summer. Yet again we like to do things with deep thought, love, ambition and talent and that's why the card artwork is drawn by Finnish comic artist Tuuli Hypén. (Some of you may remember her classic "conflict in the woods" drawing based on the old title screen.) We've cherished and talked about the card themes and plots during the spring, the creation is in progress, and below you can find a sneak preview collage consisting of drafts, sketches and semi-finished artwork. Trading Cards are likely to be launched even before the actual next version is finished. We'll start with six cards, and most likely expand the pack in the future. Prepare yourselves, foreign and domestic card traders! This is upcoming stuff, not yet featured in the current version 3.40 June 03, 2017, 07:16:33 PM |
